In June 2006, 20 artists from all over Asia and Europe were selected to particpate in an art camp in Helsinki. The Fourth Asia-Europe Art Camp "Hearing Helsinki", was co-organised by the Media Lab of the University of art and Design and the Asia-Europe Foundation. Since 2004, ASEF has been placing an emphasis on new media art in the series of art camps. This camp focused on the "creative process" rather than the "artistic product", whilst trying to offer a platform for exchange of information, contextualisation of art practices and sharing of inspiration. The programme provided a forum for discussing sonic experiences guided by a team of artists and new media practitioners.
The focus was the observation, analysis and documentation of the shared sonic environment we are surrounded by. The aim, to collaborate with another artist and create a sound piece that reflected the meanings and emotions conveyed through sound under the title "Hearing Helsinki".
Two outputs were produced from this:
1) Presentation of sound work at the ASEM6 conference on 10-11 September 2006;
2) The Euro-Asia Participative Channel
